Improving fire safety conduct and awareness for the University of Manchester
How the University of Manchester traded manual disciplinary sessions for Browzer Learn – an automated, data-driven approach to student safety and accountability.
The challenge
Repeated rule breaking around fire safety
Resource drain on staff to deliver disciplinary sessions
No way to track engagement or compliance
The University of Manchester faced a common headache in student accommodation – fire safety rule-breaking.
Their existing system relied on fines or in-person sessions that were inconsistent, time-consuming and, most importantly, weren't stopping the incidents from happening again.
They needed a way to educate, not just punish, while keeping a bulletproof record for compliance.
The Strategy: Browzer Learn
We replaced the manual ‘tellings-off’ with the Browzer Learn digital platform, featuring a suite of bespoke, interactive training decks designed to be as engaging as they are informative.
Working with the Manchester team, we built a digital disciplinary path that actually sticks.
How we levelled up the training:
Neurodiverse-Friendly Design: Content built for all learners using a mix of video, interactive quizzes, and accessible written guides.
A Single Source of Truth: A centralised platform where all safety content lives, ensuring every student gets the same high-standard education.
Automated Accountability: Built-in analytics that track exactly who has finished the course, identifying students who need extra support before issues escalate.
Real reflection and measurable impact
In just the first six months, the shift from manual to digital delivered a complete cultural change in the halls:
With 21 bespoke training areas live, the platform achieved a staggering 82% engagement rate.
Over 200 students were enrolled in targeted modules, moving the disciplinary process from a punitive fine to a genuine learning moment.
The results weren't just in the data, they were in the students’ attitudes. Feedback showed a profound shift, with residents reporting a new sense of responsibility for their flatmates' safety and a real understanding of the ‘why’ behind the rules.
“Working with CampusLife has been extremely beneficial in creating a more positive and educational approach to hall disciplinary outcomes. Their expertise has been invaluable.”
Why this changes the game
Stop wasting staff hours on repetitive in-person training.
By automating the educational side of disciplinary action, you free your team to focus on high-level student support and community building.
Don't just hope they've learned it – prove it!
Detailed analytics provide a clear audit trail of exactly who has completed their safety training, giving you peace of mind for health and safety audits.
By using varied content formats, you ensure that essential safety messaging is accessible to everyone.
It’s about empowering students to create a safer, more respectful living environment for themselves.
The feedback on this work has been phenomenal. The University and CampusLife were nominated for a CUBO award in Summer 2025 for this project, and students have commented how important it is to them.
“After completing the course, I’ve come to realise the profound impact that our behaviour can have on those around us.”
